| Education co-op, school district spar over finance records, audits
The Bruceville-Eddy school district and the Rio Brazos Education Cooperative have come to a legal agreement to allow state and federal audits to move forward, but a battle between the two entities over records and money is likely to continue. Bad feelings began churning last year when the Texas Education Agency was asked to conduct an audit to determine whether the Bruceville-Eddy Independent School District, which formerly managed the co-op’s finances, owed other co-op districts money. In question: Whether Bruceville-Eddy ISD officials failed to distribute more than $1 million they should have received from the state. The Bruceville-Eddy ISD bluntly denies any funding irregularities. Last month, Bruceville-Eddy ISD officials filed a request for a temporary restraining order, which they said was necessary to prevent the destroying or altering of records currently maintained by the cooperative.
New Online Faculty Recruiting Consortium to Advertise Career ...
Experience has taught SUNY Cortland human resources staff that good faculty often come in twos. Thats why the College recently joined a newly created online faculty recruitment consortium that will help pair academic couples with jobs at neighboring colleges. The Upstate New York Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (UNY-HERC), co-led by Syracuse University and Cornell University, was launched on Thursday, Feb. 15, as a resource to Upstate colleges and universities seeking to hire the most qualified and diverse staff while helping their significant others find local jobs, too. UNY-HERCs Web site http://www.unyherc.org features the collaboration of 23 diverse public and private schools, colleges and universities across the state that are working together to cohesively provide employment listings at each of their respective higher education institutions and address dual career needs in higher education.
Education jet-set might try the train
In these global times, mandarins from the Department for Education and Skills commendably visit other education systems in search of ideas that might improve schools. England has acquired reading recovery from New Zealand and maths teaching techniques from Taiwan, Hungary and Switzerland. Elements of the US charter schools have been used in the planning of academies. Last year, the Rose review of reading recommended the universal adoption of a system of phonics developed in Scotland's smallest county, Clackmannanshire. This import of ideas from north of the border is unusual, but should, perhaps, become a trend. Scotland's school structure differs in significant ways from England's. Primary and secondary schools - often grouped together in catchment "families" - are maintained by 32 local authorities.
McKinney ISD students perform among highest in Texas
The Texas Education Agency recently released its annual Academic Excellence Indicator System (AEIS) report for all school districts in Texas. The report is a compilation of information on everything from student attendance rates to results on statewide assessments. The data in the report enables districts to compare themselves to state averages, as well as comparable districts, to determine areas for improvement. Students in McKinney ISD outperformed the state average on TAKS by a large margin. When looking at the number of students meeting the TAKS standards, McKinney ISD scored as many as 19 percentage points higher than the state average. Overall, the District performed in the top 4 percent of districts on the percentage of students meeting the standards. 93 percent of all TAKS tests taken last year by McKinney ISD students "met standard". Out of 1,223 districts, only two larger than McKinney ISD, performed at such a high level. Both Frisco ISD and Plano ISD tied McKinney ISD on overall performance.
