March is Nutrition Month again
The Fitial administration has once again declared the month of March as CNMI Nutrition Month to promote continuing education on the need for good nutrition practices in the CNMI.In a proclamation he signed in his office, Gov. Benigno R. Fitial is again asking the community to participate in this month's celebration of healthier living in the Commonwealth.Fitial said that good nutrition and physical activity are key components of a healthy lifestyle."Diet and physical activity are important in the prevention of chronic health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, tooth decay, osteoporosis, and some forms of cancer," he said.He added that there is a need for continuing education and a concentrated community effort to enhance good nutrition practices. Council advocates for STEM aid
A group is advocating that state officials give more financial aid to students who are in math or science-related fields - a recommendation that is being questioned by some Youngstown State University students and faculty. The Science and Mathematics Education Policy Advisory Council recommends the increase in financial aid available to students entering into science, technology engineering and mathematics (STEM) majors. The Ohio Department of Education, the governor's office and the Ohio Board of Regents developed the council and its mission. The suggestion for extra financial aid is one of several listed in a report by the council and released by the Ohio Board of Regents last week. Interim Associate Provost Nathan Ritchey said the recommendation is part of an initiative throughout the state to double the number of students who pursue careers in the STEM fields.

The third phase of the countrywide National Family Health Survey (NFHS) has revealed this abysmal picture about the women across the state. The latest NFHS-III found that among the metros, Chennai recorded the maximum of 40.6 per cent women being subjected to physical and sexual torture followed by Kolkata with 26.7 per cent. Interestingly, the two metros where women have been found vulnerable outdoors, time and again, have a better record for the fairer sex with Delhi and Mumbai accounting for 16.3 and 19.5 per cent cases of domestic abuse, respectively.
