| Board of Education submits $466.4M budget
FREDERICK -- In a perfect world, the Frederick County Board of Education would get every cent of its $466.4 million request for the fiscal 2008 operating budget. In reality, the amount of money the school system receives from county, state and federal funds likely will fall below the initial request. "(There is) almost no likelihood of full funding of our budget," Executive Director for Fiscal Services Harold Keller, Jr. told the board Wednesday during a planning session where they discussed and amended the budget. The budget, which is $54.7 million, or 13.3 percent, more than last year's, includes: $8.4 million in administration costs $175.7 million in instructional salaries $19 million for transportation The school board forwarded the proposed budget to the county commissioners Thursday.
Imagination and creativity bring Fender Center for Music Education ...
When establishing a non-profit organization, there are two very important things needed to make the difference between it becoming an ordinary organization, and an organization that sparkles like a rare canary diamond. Those two elements are a little imagination, and a lot of creativity. That is exactly what Corona's Fender Center for Music Education possesses.Founded in July of 1997, the Fender Center for Music Education was created to instill a love of music in children between the ages of 7 and 17-years-old. With the amount of music education programs being cut in public schools, and the high price of music lessons, the Center offers a venue where children can experience music first-hand, even if they come from underprivileged families, and do not have the means for expensive music and/or vocal lessons.
Group launches public school parent blog
(STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE) -- They said their voices weren't being heard, but at least now their message can be seen. Education advocates have created what they're calling New York City's first public school parent blog in order to challenge what they view as Department of Education misinformation, media inaccuracy and a false perception in other cities that parents here are pleased with mayoral control of public schools. "I want everybody to have a forum to really express their views of what's happened here in New York City over the past six years," said Leonie Haimson, of the advocacy group Class Size Matters, who helped create the blog along with colleague Patrick Sullivan. The blog (short for weblog) hosts have secured noted education historian Diane Ravitch as a regular contributor, and have invited about 15 other education experts to do the same.
Lender/University Entanglements
Three years ago, the University of Nebraska's Board of Regents, eager to find more funds for undergraduate need-based financial aid for students at its flagship campus in Lincoln, struck a deal in which the National Education Loan Network, would provide loan funds that the university would administer to its graduate and professional students. As part of the arrangement, authorized through a process known as “school as lender," Nelnet, as the Lincoln-based lender is known, would give the institution more than 6 percent of the profits to use for need-based aid. .
