| Should the mayor be able to teach also?
Students, today we will study the case of Hartwell Mayor Matt Beasley, who wants to teach social studies at Hart County High School, and a majority of the Hart County School Board won't let him. The scenario, students, is this: Mayor Beasley is a native, 40-year-old Hartwellian. A husband. A father. He has a four-year degree from the University of Georgia, a Masters of Education degree from Clemson University and a specialist degree in social science education from UGA. He has taught government and social studies for 13 years at Hart County High School. During that time, he was named Teacher of the Year by the faculty and the high school yearbook was twice dedicated to him by senior classes. In November 2001, Mr. Beasley was elected mayor of Hartwell. While serving as mayor, he continued to teach for a year and half.

When their children are learning English, immigrant parents get advice that surprises them: Don't stop speaking your native language at home. Speak as much as possible, and teach as much as you can. The message draws on research showing that literacy skills learned in one language can be applied in another. That's long been the basis of bilingual education, but even children who aren't enrolled in bilingual programs are being urged to develop their primary language alongside English. Speaking to a group of Spanish-speaking parents in White Plains one evening, teacher Eliana Fernandez said: "The more you teach in Spanish, the easier it will be to transfer to English." She urged them to play with words and point out letters on street signs, like "Macy's" and "Mamaroneck." Next door, children were listening to "A Snowy Day" read aloud in English and Spanish, and writing vocabulary words in pretend snow.
Suicide Risk of Neurontin Kept Hidden for Years
The all-time poster child for a drug illegally promoted for off-label uses, is Neurontin, marketed by Warner-Lambert, and its Parke-Davis division, until Pfizer acquired the company in 2000. The term "off-label" means prescribing a drug for indications not listed on the label, upping the recommended dose, prescribing a drug in combination with other medications, or using a drug with a patient population, such as children, not listed on the label. As part of the approval process, the FDA reviews the drug's labeling, which must include the proposed claims about the drug's risks and benefits, as well as the directions for use. If an indication is not listed, it means the drug maker has not submitted the required studies to prove the drug is safe and effective for that use. While physicians may prescribe a drug approved by the FDA for an unapproved use, it's against the law for a drug maker to influence doctors to prescribe a drug for uses outside the label.

School Board OKs bonus plan
Pending final approval of the school system's bonus plan by the Florida Department of Education, the top 25 percent of Okeechobee teachers will be receiving a 5 percent bonus. In spite of objections by the Okeechobee County Education Association (OCEA), the union representing teachers, the Special Teachers are Rewarded (STAR) program was approved by the Okeechobee County School Board at a special meeting on Tuesday evening, Feb. 27. The STAR program is a one-year bonus program established by the state legislature. Using broad guidelines each school system in conjunction with the local teachers' union was required to submit a plan to the Department of Education for awarding bonuses to the top teachers. March 1 is the deadline for submitting the proposal.
Postgraduate programs garner highest rankings
The rankings, released by for-profit company Academic Analytics, cast U programs in a better light than more popular ranking systems like the U.S.News & World Report annual review. The U's health science programs performed most strongly in the rankings, with pharmaceutical sciences and medicinal chemistry ranked third and anatomy was named eighth. Also ranked in the top 10 were the bioengineering, special education, and education and psychology programs. U administrators are calling the evaluation an "unbiased" alternative to the U.S.News report and other ranking systems, because it uses objective information rather than opinion surveys. The Academic Analytics rankings are based on a 2005 scholarly production index that measures the number of publications, federal grants and awards faculty members receive each year.
