| Ghana: Political Authorities Must Not Forget Their ...
AS DISTRICT ASSEMBLIES assume greater responsibilities for schools in the country, the Ghana National Association of Private schools (GNAPS) has raised the concern that political authorities must not forget that the responsibility for students' performance lies not just with educators, but on them as well. According to GNAPS, political authorities must be reminded that their role was not to fund education in their Districts henceforth but only to invest there and in so doing will have leverage to demand results from school heads. .
High schools face decreasing reading comprehension, reports finds
According to the Nation's Report Card, United States reading rates for high school seniors are at their lowest in more than 13 years. The figure has caused concern among legislators, who are now attempting to reconcile the figures with the high school grade point averages that are reportedly rising nationwide. The National Center for Education Statistics tested more than 17,600 schools across the country in 2005 in reading and math proficiency for the annual report. The center found that the overall number of high school seniors who were at or above basic reading level dropped from 80 to 73 percent, and those at a proficient level dropped from 40 to 35 percent since 1992, according to a NCES press release. The NCES report of decreasing reading comprehension conflicts with current reports that the GPA among high school students is increasing throughout the country.
