| Making music despite progressive hearing loss in both ears
Working toward his doctorate in musical arts at West Virginia University, Yew Choong Cheong has a few things in common with Ludwig van Beethoven. For starters, they're both talented pianists. Recently awarded the 2007 International Young Soloists Award by VSA arts, Cheong, 28, won a $5,000 scholarship to continue music education and an invitation to play the piano at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington. VSA arts is an international, nonprofit society for people with disabilities to participate in and enjoy the arts. Then there's the disability. Like Beethoven, Cheong makes music despite progressive hearing loss affecting both ears. Cheong wears a hearing aid, but he cannot use the telephone, and face-to-face conversations are sometimes difficult.
Ministry denies owing money to fired teacher
The Ministry of Education maintains it owes nothing to Jennifer Elliot, the special education teacher from the United Kingdom who was fired a short time after her arrival, and Acting Director of Education Cecil Thompson believes she is now on a campaign to have The Bahamas blacklisted. "This campaign she's waging is meant to blacklist The Bahamas," he told The Freeport News yesterday, recalling Elliot's promise to him when he met her in 2005. Elliot was contracted for three years and spent all of five months and insists the ministry treated her unfairly and owes her money. She recently contacted The Freeport News to complain about her financial neglect and wrongful termination. But according to ministry records, the special education teacher, who has since returned to the U.K., violated the terms of the contract, was terminated and paid in full as of January 21, 2006.
More black women than men entering medical school
(Taylor Media Services) - The trend of fewer and fewer young African-American males seeking higher education appears to be showing up in medical school enrollments. According to data released last week by the Association of American Medical Colleges, Black female applicants and medical school students now outnumber Black males by better than two to one. Among all ethnic and racial groups, the male-female ratio in the nation's medical schools is around 50-50. But among Blacks, females account for nearly 70 percent of medical school students, according to the association. The developments in medical schools reflect a disturbing national trend in which the number of Black females acquiring higher educations is rapidly outpacing the number of Black males seeking college education.
Jonesboro elementary schools aim at students' needs; convert to ...
In August the Jonesboro School District elementary schools will become magnet schools. Magnet schools are schools designed around a theme. The curriculum meets the Arkansas Department of Education guidelines, but is "taught with a slant that is more interesting to students that go there," said Donna Creer, executive director of the Magnet School Review Committee in Little Rock. "A magnet school is a school that attracts students based on their interest, need or ability in a particular area." Creer said that drop out rates for magnet schools are lower than the state average, and test scores for students from magnet schools are higher when compared to the state average. Creer said that the data used to support these claims was several years old. Dr.

Adult education volunteers are needed
Servicing several hundred people within the county, as well as 90 individuals in the county detention center, Bill Teegarden, director of Adult Education, said it is difficult to meet the needs of all the students with just one other full-time employee and a part-time employee."You're talking about a very limited staff we have to do that," Teegarden said. The volunteers would fill in the gaps when needed and tutor students on subjects related to reading and language or math.Teegarden said many people think of students seeking their GED when they think of the Adult Education Program. However, he said the program is also comprised of students seeking to improve their COMPASS scores, a test similar to the ACT or SAT for other universities and colleges, or hoping to test out of developmental courses.Teegarden said the typical student in the Adult Education Program is a "non-traditional" student, who may have been out of school for several years.
