| Soho and SMB Segments Growing in Alwar
Situated 150 kilometers from Rajasthan capital Jaipur, Alwar has a booming IT market with Soho and SMB segments doing particularly well. In the recently concluded Yatra, attended by 29 partners the mood was upbeat about the way IT market is shaping up in this township. "The IT market is expanding pretty well with awareness level going up as computer education has being made mandatory in schools", said Dilip Chaudhary, President, Alwar Computer Hardware Association. The market mainly comprises of assembled PCs but slowly even the branded products are also making inroads. "The reason why home users do not like to go for branded is because there is a problem of excise duty on branded PCs making it expensive", stated Gaurav Jain of Domain Computer Systems. The ratio of assembled to branded PCs is 80:20 percent.
‘Investigate schoolgirl pregnancies’
Researchers should also investigate why the problem of schoolgirl pregnancies seemed to be more acute in certain schools and whether this was the result of poor sex education. “Such a correlation would enable (the education department) to plan interventions directed, for example, at improving the quality of sex education in our schools. “From an educational perspective, it is as important to know what is working — and to implement more of it — as it is to know what is not working,” Balt said. .
College presidents' pay soars
The University of Colorado will step into a competitive market when it begins searching for its next president - one in which salaries are soaring to new highs, and there are dozens of open positions nationwide. Higher-education experts say the increasing complexity of the top job is driving up compensation packages for university presidents, whose pay typically falls between that of a tenured professor and a Division 1 football coach. CU's Hank Brown announced last month that he will step down in February 2008, giving the school ample time to conduct a nationwide search. Critics of the increasing presidential pay scale, though, are concerned it distracts universities from their academic missions. The number of public-university presidents earning $500,000 or more has nearly doubled over the past year, from 23 to 42, according to a survey published in November by the Chronicle of Higher Education.

FEI Demonstrates Table-Top Scanning Electron Microscope for ...
FEI demonstrated the world's first tabletop scanning electron microscope (SEM) designed specifically for education on Capitol Hill last week. The Phenom-Ed provides magnification up to 20,000x -- far beyond the range of traditional optical microscopes giving students access to micro- and nanoscale worlds rarely seen in undergraduate and high school studies. Congressman David Wu (D-OR), Congresswoman Darlene Hooley (D-OR), Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Senator Gordon Smith (D-OR), among many other guests, attended the unveiling. FEI developed the microscope to bring a new teaching dimension to the classroom and foster interest in advanced science education. It is envisioned that the Phenom-Ed will provide educators a tool to greatly enhance traditional teaching methods and open the door for the next generation of innovative scientists.
