| 10 signs your degree is fake
Online education is a $10 billion-a-year industry, up from $2.5 billion in 2004, according to the "Postsecondary Education Factbook." Enrollment for online courses is projected to reach about 1.7 million U.S. students this year, more than three times those enrolled in 2002. Some online programs have been accused of being degree mills: fake universities that sell college diplomas, not an education. Use these tips for identifying degree mills. 1. Your chosen university is not accredited. 2. Your chosen university is accredited but not by an agency recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation, www.chea.org. Internet degree mills are "accredited" by bogus agencies that they themselves have created. These bogus accrediting agencies often have prestigious sounding names.
Should Darwin be de-emphasized?
A week after events on the Kansas University campus and nationwide marked the 198th birthday of Charles Darwin, there's an article in The Chronicle of Higher Education describing one scholar's view that Darwin should be played down. "Evolutionary biology is a branch of natural science that is far beyond anything Darwin could have imagined," evolutionary biologist, Ulrich Kutschera, is quoted saying at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. An excerpt: "Mr. Kutschera, a professor of plant physiology and evolutionary biology at the University of Kassel in Germany, said scientists should emphasize that evolution is a fully formed field of biological study 'built up by generations of non-dogmatic scientists.' Terms like Darwinism can make evolutionary biology seem like an ideology, rather than a focus of empirical work, he said." It's an issue that's not lost on the "Darwin Day" organizers at KU.

Imagination and creativity bring Fender Center for Music Education ...
When establishing a non-profit organization, there are two very important things needed to make the difference between it becoming an ordinary organization, and an organization that sparkles like a rare canary diamond. Those two elements are a little imagination, and a lot of creativity. That is exactly what Corona's Fender Center for Music Education possesses.Founded in July of 1997, the Fender Center for Music Education was created to instill a love of music in children between the ages of 7 and 17-years-old. With the amount of music education programs being cut in public schools, and the high price of music lessons, the Center offers a venue where children can experience music first-hand, even if they come from underprivileged families, and do not have the means for expensive music and/or vocal lessons.
Physical Education Required for 12th Graders
Eleventh and 12th grade students will be able to choose elective subjects among six subject areas, up from the current five, and 10th grade students will be required to take an additional hour of science and history each week. Music, art and physical education will be assessed in a different way such as a descriptive system, replacing the current rating system, which categorizes students into five groups: excellent, very good, good, fair, and poor, to lessen the learning burden of students. The Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development announced on Friday that the seventh revision of primary and secondary curriculum would be applied in phases starting 2009. Splitting the music/art/physical education group- The Ministry of Education increased the number of selective subject areas from five to six: Korean/ethics/social studies; math/science/technology/home management; physical education; music/art, foreign languages; and electives, by splitting the current music/art/physical education group into physical education and music/art.
State invites HC's ire over pvt practice
LUCKNOW: The Lucknow Bench of Allahabad High Court has pulled up state administration for not being able to take action against doctors indulging in private practice despite directions from the high court in this regard. Describing state administration's inaction as "apathy towards the issue"and "scant respect for court's order", the Bench has ordered senior government officers to appear in person in the court on the next hearing. Justice Pradeep Kant and Justice Ajai Kumar Singh, while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), in its order said that on February 13 the court had passed an order requiring the Director General Medical Education (DGME) to file an affidavit indicating action taken against doctors of the state medical colleges for violating the ban on private practice and the orders passed the court, but no such affidavit has been filed nor any explanation or reason has been given for not filing the affidavit.

Uthingo lotto appeal hit by Pandor share shock
Trade and Industry Minister Mandisi Mpahlwa yesterday turned the tables on aggrieved lottery operator Uthingo, telling the Pretoria High Court that Uthingo was ruled out of contention for the new lottery licence because Education Minister Naledi Pandor had shares in a company with a stake in Uthingo. However, Mpahlwa’s legal team defended prominent African National Congress (ANC) member Max Sisulu’s financial interest in the winning Gidani consortium, on the grounds that he was not a political office-bearer. The hearing is likely to refocus attention on the role of politicians in companies that tender for state contracts. Uthingo is challenging Mpahlwa’s decision last year to award the lottery licence to Gidani, and wants the court to set aside the decision and hand the licence to Uthingo pending the outcome of the judicial review.
