Board to revisit librarian question

LONG BEACH - For the second consecutive meeting, the Long Beach Board of Education on Tuesday is scheduled to consider increasing the number of credentialed librarians.

Board members Michael Ellis and David Barton have proposed that the district gradually increase schools' librarian-to-student ratios over the next four academic years until they match those recommended by the California School Library Association.

The ratios would differ from school to school depending on the grades served and student enrollment.

Under the proposal, the five-member board would revisit the issue each February during the next three academic years and decide whether to continue with the planned increases.

A similar proposal by Ellis and Barton at the Feb. 20 board meeting failed 3-2 after other board members said they wanted to wait until district staff provided a cost estimate before supporting the motion.

MC gets grant for program

Marietta College will begin a course this summer that may benefit local elementary school students.

The colleges education department was recently awarded a $30,000 grant from the Special Education Personnel Development Advisory Committee of the Ohio Department of Education Office for Exceptional Children. The grant will be used to help future teachers learn how to assess students with reading and behavioral problems.

Were going to work with students to teach them how to work with at-risk students, said Carolyn Backus, assistant professor of education at Marietta College. If youre having problems with reading, you might be having behavior problems, and if youre having behavior issues, its highly probable youre having reading problems.

Part of the goal of the project is to show that some children have increased behavior issues due to the frustration of reading difficulties, said Bill Bauer, associate professor of education.
