New Study Explores the Nature of Online Learning in K-12 Schools

NEEDHAM, Mass., March 5 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Sloan Consortium's first ever survey of online learning in elementary and secondary education, "K-12 Online Learning: A Survey of U.S. School District Administrators," predicts rapid growth in online education. The nationwide survey, conducted during the 2005-2006 academic year, finds that almost two out of three (63 %) school districts had one or more students enrolled in either a fully online or a blended course, which combines online learning with traditional face-to-face instruction. The new study estimates that 700,000 K-12 students were engaged in online courses in the 2005-2006 academic year. The complete survey is available at http://www.sloan-c.org/publications/survey/index.asp.

New Council Calls for Immediate Increase in Nurse, Physician Education

PHILADELPHIA -- The Council on Physician and Nurse Supply concluded its first meeting in Philadelphia with the statement that, at current levels of training, nurse and physician shortages will deepen and there will be too few physicians and nurses to meet the future needs of the nation. The council called for immediate efforts to expand nursing and medical education.

The council, which is based at the University of Pennsylvania and is supported by AMN Healthcare, a national healthcare staffing organization, expressed concern that persistent shortages of nurses and physicians could have a number of adverse consequences, including the following:

*inadequate access to care, particularly in rural and inner city locations.*lack of the necessary capacity for emergency preparedness.*decreased ability to accomplish planned expansions of healthcare services, with attendant negative effects on local and national economies.*increased dependence on foreign nurses and physicians, worsening the brain drain that already is crippling a number of developing countries, while young people in the US are deprived of the opportunity to become high-level health professionals.

Imagination and creativity bring Fender Center for Music Education ...

When establishing a non-profit organization, there are two very important things needed to make the difference between it becoming an ordinary organization, and an organization that sparkles like a rare canary diamond. Those two elements are a little imagination, and a lot of creativity. That is exactly what Corona's Fender Center for Music Education possesses.Founded in July of 1997, the Fender Center for Music Education was created to instill a love of music in children between the ages of 7 and 17-years-old. With the amount of music education programs being cut in public schools, and the high price of music lessons, the Center offers a venue where children can experience music first-hand, even if they come from underprivileged families, and do not have the means for expensive music and/or vocal lessons.
