Garza: Texas colleges important bridges between cultures

"The things taught in colleges and schools are not an education, but the means of education," Ralph Waldo Emerson said two centuries ago. Indeed, the test of any great institution of higher learning is whether it produces original thinkers, entrepreneurs, and those willing to look through, past and beyond to see what others do not.

The University of Texas System is an institution dedicated to those ideals. Under the leadership of Gov. Rick Perry, UT System regents and campus presidents, our universities will not only be on the cutting edge of educating students in technology-related fields, they will also be a bridge of learning and understanding between the United States and our Latin American neighbors.

New Study Explores the Nature of Online Learning in K-12 Schools

NEEDHAM, Mass., March 5 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Sloan Consortium's first ever survey of online learning in elementary and secondary education, "K-12 Online Learning: A Survey of U.S. School District Administrators," predicts rapid growth in online education. The nationwide survey, conducted during the 2005-2006 academic year, finds that almost two out of three (63 %) school districts had one or more students enrolled in either a fully online or a blended course, which combines online learning with traditional face-to-face instruction. The new study estimates that 700,000 K-12 students were engaged in online courses in the 2005-2006 academic year. The complete survey is available at http://www.sloan-c.org/publications/survey/index.asp.

"We are seeing a shift in how our children are learning: from a strictly classroom setting to a culture that includes online learning," said Frank Mayadas, program director, Alfred P.

State ruling awaited on sex-ed challenge

Maryland school officials say they will respond as early as this week to a request to stop Montgomery County from beginning sex-education classes this month that include lessons on homosexuality and the use of condoms.
"I expect a ruling by the end of [the] week," said Bill Reinhard, a spokesman for the Maryland State Board of Education.
The request was filed by a group of residents and parents known as Citizens for a Responsible Curriculum (CRC).
The county's Board of Education unanimously approved the new curriculum for eighth- and 10th-graders in January and filed a response Tuesday to the group's request to stop the classes, which will begin as a pilot project in six county schools.
"I don't think the state board will rule in favor of the appeal," said Stephen N.
