Kern River Run to benefit KCFD fire prevention education

The 6th annual Kern River Run, scheduled for March 24 at the Kern River Park, east of Lake Ming, will benefit the Kern County Fire Prevention and Public Education Department. According to Captain Doug Johnston of the KCFD, since it’s inception in 2002, the race has helped to raise more than $22,000 for the department, specifically for fire safety trailers used to teach children how to safely respond in the event of a fire in the home. "The fire safety trailer simulator creates and atmosphere similar to what might be experienced in a house fire so the children can learn about staying low and escaping without injury," stated a press released issued by Johnston. The race includes a 5K, 10 and 20 mile runs, as well as a "Super Aid Station Competition." In addition to offering cups of water to runners, aid stations also offer a variety of munchies, beverages and entertainment.

Budgets Boost State's Nursing Faculty

BOISE, Idaho (AP) - State lawmakers have approved a substantial investment in the nursing programs at Idaho colleges and universities.

In new budgets for the state's two community colleges and its four-year schools, lawmakers approved money for additional nursing faculty and to create slots for an additional 200 nursing students around the state.

The money is intended to help ease a nursing shortage.

Governor Butch Otter has recommended funding two new nursing education buildings in next year's budget but didn't recommend any new faculty. A state nursing task force had recommended substantial increases both in faculty and their pay.

Budget bills still require the approval of the House, Senate and the governor, but they are rarely changed once the committee sets them.

For education's new direction

THE country requires not the creation of parasitical elements in the name of education but useful manpower to feed the growing diverse needs of its economy. Therefore, one is dismayed to read reports that official allocations for educational institutions that have a direct relationship to creating human resources for the country's needs are inadequate. Investors in education, both government and private, should look for areas where profitability would be more or less assured and where new educational capacities would create human resources in different fields in support of entrepreneurial activities. For instance, fashion institutes are needed to bolster the country's export-oriented ready-made garments (RMG) sector. A few of them have been set up but more are needed. Institutions to impart education and training in leather technology are in very short supply.

Students at Perritt and Central Primary schools begin testing today, with students at Peake Elementary and Goza Middle School getting ready for testing to begin Tuesday. Ninth grade students at Arkadelphia High School begin testing later this month. All students in grades kindergarten through nine will take the Iowa Basic Skills Test, which is required by the Arkansas State Department of Education, said Dr. Stan Miller, superintendent of schools."It gives us good feedback on reading" and other subjects, Miller said.
