2007 Preschool Literacy Program

In an effort to help preschoolers become avid readers, Preschool Education writer, Rachel Lister has launched the 2007 Preschool Literacy Program, "Rock Through the Alphabet."

The 2007 Preschool Literacy Program, "Rock Through the Alphabet" is a curriculum program designed for parents and teachers of preschoolers. Each week, Lister will feature literacy activities and curriculum ideas for each letter of the alphabet. Literacy activities and curriculum ideas will include art, crafts, books, math, science, music and pretend play.

Lister writes, "Preschoolers have the opportunity to create a wonderful foundation for a lifetime of reading by participating in simple and fun pre-reading activities. Making reading fun for preschoolers is easier than many parents and preschool teachers realize.

Pass proposed suicide legislation

A recent Chronicle of Higher Education article said a bill was approved by the Virginia legislature that would not allow public colleges and universities to expel or dismiss suicidal students.

All that's left is for that state's governor, Tim Kaine, to sign it into law.

This is a positive thing, and more states, including Ohio, should look into passing similar laws.

The Chronicle article said The bill came about after a number of universities were sued by students who had been suspended after attempting suicide or seeking treatment for depression.

After the bill turns into law, "students at public universities could not be 'penalized or expelled solely for attempting to commit suicide, or seeking mental-health treatment for suicidal thoughts or behaviors,'" as reported by the Chronicle.

Gauteng shocked by number of pregnant girls

This school boasts a top place in Gauteng education, but it isn't an achievement to be proud of - last year, a staggering 71 of its pupils were pregnant. And the pregnant pupils at Altmont Technical School in Soweto are only a fraction of the 2 336 Gauteng schoolgirls who became pregnant last year - a figure that is double that recorded in 2005. But, while the Gauteng education department on Sunday admitted that the pupil pregnancy figures were "shocking", it insisted that "(the pregnancies) are not our problem". In a move that has been criticised by child rights and media freedom experts, the department has also threatened to take action against Democratic Alliance Gauteng MPL Jack Bloom, who released the statistics to the media. .

East Ramapo and Clarkstown districts honored for music education

A survey by leading music and educational organizations places the Clarkstown and East Ramapo school districts among the nation's top 100 communities for music education.

Sponsored by the Carlsbad, Calif.-based NAMM Foundation, the annual "Best 100 Communities for Music Education in America" recognizes school districts for their unwavering commitment to school-based music programs.

"We are very honored to receive this award and be among the hundred best," said Gail Calisof, supervisor of music and art for the East Ramapo district. "We are proud of our music program, which allows every child the opportunity to study music."

It's not the first time either district has been recognized: Clarkstown has received the survey seven times since the survey began eight years ago.
