| Homework, no home
They fly under the radar in places few would think to look. At night, they lay their heads down in abandoned automobiles, in motel rooms, in spare corners in the homes of relatives. They are the estimated 1,500 children who are homeless yet enrolled in a Pinellas County public school. Thousands of others can be found in Hillsborough and Pasco schools, and in school districts across the state. Curtis Reitmeyer is one of them. The 10-year-old will tell you the best hours of his day are the ones he spends at Skycrest Elementary School in Clearwater. The rest of the time, he's cooped up in a cramped motel room with his mom and dad, his older brother and two younger sisters. Curtis says that sharing a bed with another family member makes it hard for him to fall asleep.

Chew: Sex education in school syllabus
KUALA LUMPUR: Sex education will be absorbed into the current school syllabus and will not be taught as a specific subject. Women, Family and Community Development Ministry parliamentary secretary Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun said the subject would be part of the education in moral, science, health, Islamic studies, biology, science and other programmes implemented by the Education Ministry. Different Version Of Sex Ed Coming To Loudoun
Much was made in some Loudoun communities over the sex education message the Loudoun County Public Schools system pushed when it brought abstinence-only speaker Keith Deltano into a handful of the areas schools. Not once, but twice, Deltano's visits raised eyebrows from groups like Mainstream Loudoun, who didn't quibble with the effectiveness of abstinence but wondered why the school system wasn't promoting a comprehensive sex education policy. Now, Mainstream Loudoun, the Unitarian Universalist Church and the St. James United Church of Christ are bringing another version of sex education to the county. Shelby Knox, who is now a senior in college, is a devout Christian and had pledged abstinence until marriage. But while a high school student in Lubbock, TX, Knox became an "unlikely advocate for comprehensive education," a release promoting the event stated. Her story will be on display in the form of an award-winning documentary, which won an award for Best Cinematography at the Sundance Film Festival in 2005 and which aired in part on PBS' Point of View series.
Raffle's chances
Was your Feb. 12 article ("Lottery idea: $20 a play for $1 million") on the upcoming state raffle a math test for us, or was it to see if we were paying attention?Recently you reported that the lottery might be falling short of expected revenues, and some noted that North Carolina pays a smaller percentage back to the players (about 52 percent) than many states, including South Carolina (59.9 percent) and Virginia (58.1 percent). According to your article on the raffle, it will pay even less than that -- 50 percent. It would take another $200,000 given out in prizes to meet the 52 percent return (I would suggest 2,000 winners of $100 each). You also reported that if all tickets are sold [the plan is to sell 500,000 tickets at $20 each], the game will generate $3.5 million for education. Granted, that is the 35 percent designated for education, but that leaves $1.5 million left over.
