Govt promises adult education programme roll-out

The national education department has promised a huge roll-out in adult education programmes next year. The undertaking has been given to the National Council of Provinces by Duncan Hindle, the department's director general.

Hindle was responding to concerns about provinces' under spending of grants given to them for Adult Basic Education and Training programmes. Hindle says treasury has given them R20 million to undertake the planning and preparatory exercise so that the huge literacy roll-out can commence next year when they do have everything in place.

There is an urgent need to build new schools but a skills shortage and other priorities such as building stadia for the FIFA World Cup is holding up the process. A parliamentary hearing has also revealed a lack of integrated planning between departments.

Bits and Pieces Bait and Switch Some People Never Learn Tipped Off ...

Passage of the state lottery bill in 2005 took more than shady dealings by former House Speaker Jim Black. It also took some traditional political horse-trading in the General Assembly. Black collected votes by spreading out the lottery proceeds to several education programs.

During his many years as a district attorney and attorney general, Gov. Mike Easley no doubt prosecuted someone for "bait and switch." Now he's trying to pull the trick himself. He's proposing to take prize money away from college scholarships and new school construction and put it, instead, into his early childhood education program.

As for legislators who might feel that they got swindled by voting for the lottery so there'd be more scholarship money for the poor, well, they just have to figure they got bluffed out of their vote.

Accredited Online Courses Make Continuing Education for Nursing ...

As the need for qualified nurses continues to outpace supply, nurses often find themselves spread too thinly. Online continuing education courses help relieve demands on nursing professionals' time by providing convenience and flexibility in meeting license renewal coursework requirements.

(PRWeb) March 2, 2007 -- Nursing staff shortages across the U.S. and Canada have made it increasingly difficult for nurses to take time away from their shifts to physically attend continuing education for nursing courses. To help nurses keep their knowledge and credentials current, RN.ORG, Inc. announces the launch of its website to provide convenient, accredited, and cost-efficient online nursing continuing education courses. .

For the first time in 30 years, Carroll County Public Schools will not offer adult education services to county residents. The system won't reapply for a $845,000 grant from the state Department of Education. Instead, Carroll Community College said it will apply for the grant from the state, which would include English as a second language classes, the external diploma program and the General Equivalency Diploma program.Staff with the community college and the school system said that if the college wins the grant, it would allow both institutions to focus on their strengths."[The community college] will better provide continuing education connections for Carroll County residents," said Dana Falls, the director of student services for the school system. "We feel that it's certainly a good organization to handle the adult education and it will allow us to focus on kids.
